Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

Transcutaneous nerve stimulation procedure may reduce pain and improve muscle strength. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation reaches good results in reducing acute and chronic pain of various causes (back pain, tense muscles, arthritis, headaches caused by muscle pain).

Duration of the procedure

Approximately 30 minutes.

Preparation

No preliminary preparation is required.

The procedure is non-invasive and painless.

Limitations

TENS may not be performed on patients, who have pacemakers, as well as during the first trimester in pregnant women (up to Week 12).

TENS significantly reduces muscle pain and increases muscle strength. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation may be used for rehabilitation and during training sessions.

Principles of the procedure

High frequency TENS activates pain-suppressing mechanisms of the nervous system.

During the procedure, electrodes are placed above or close to the painful area, which stimulates the blocking of pain signal aiming at the prevention of its transmission to the brain, as a result of which the pain is not perceived. Low frequency TENS stimulates the release of endorphins – natural anaesthetics of the body, thus reducing pain.

It must be considered that TENS does not treat the cause of the disease!

The device is small – the electrodes are applied on the painful area, the physiotherapist selects the appropriate programme and then stimulation of the painful areas is performed, as a result of which, the pain is reduced.
